What does COSHH mean?
COSHH stands for Control of Substances Hazardous to Health. HSE’s guidance explains how workplaces identify harmful substances and control exposure. Start with the regulator’s COSHH basics .

What to explore first
- Identify substances and activities that may create exposure.
- Read the relevant safety information and understand the routes of exposure.
- Explore how risks are assessed and exposure is controlled.
- Notice where information, instruction and training fit into a safe way of working.
Use HSE’s material to build awareness and prepare questions for an employer or trainer.

Try a learning activity
Choose a familiar workplace activity, such as cleaning a shared space. Without handling chemicals or changing a procedure, write down:
- What information would you need about the products and task?
- Who would you ask about the approved working method?
- What would you do if you could not find the instructions?
The aim is to practise asking informed questions. Your workplace’s procedures and training govern the task.
Free guidance and certificates are different
The HSE reading linked here is free guidance, not a course certificate. Completing this page does not qualify you to carry out a COSHH assessment or establish competence. If a vacancy asks for a particular certificate, ask which provider or qualification the employer accepts.
For assessment responsibilities, read HSE’s training and competence FAQ . We have not labelled a paid certificate as a free course.
