Use a computer to apply
Follow one task at a time. Button names can differ between phones, computers and apps.
1. Find a file you saved
A file is a saved document, picture or other item. A folder holds files.
- Open your device’s Files app or File Explorer. On a Mac, open Finder.
- Look for the Downloads folder.
- Find the file by its name. Open it to check it is the right one.
Try it: download this made-up CV text file, then find “practice-cv.txt” in Downloads.
2. Attach your CV to an email
An attachment is a file sent with an email. Use the made-up practice file until you feel confident.
- Open a new email. Enter the correct recipient and a clear subject.
- Write a short message saying which job you are applying for.
- Choose Attach, Attach file or the paperclip button.
- Select your CV file. Wait for its name to appear in the email.
- Check the file, recipient and message before you send.
Try it: send the practice file to your own email address, then open the attachment.
3. Upload your CV on a job website
Upload means sending a file from your device to a website.
- Read which file types and sizes the employer accepts.
- Choose Upload, Browse or Choose file on the application page.
- Find your CV, select it and choose Open or Done.
- Wait for confirmation. Check the filename or preview before submitting the application.
Only upload personal details to a site you have checked. Read how to check a job advert.
4. Edit a document and save a PDF
In Word or another document app, open your CV template and replace each placeholder. Choose Save as or Save a copy so you keep your original.
A PDF keeps the appearance of a document. If an employer requests one, look for Save as PDF, Export to PDF or Print then Save as PDF. Open the saved file and check every page before using it.
Try it: type a three-line introduction in a document, save it, then make a PDF copy.
5. Try a simple spreadsheet
A spreadsheet has rows and columns. Each box is a cell.
- Download the application tracker and open it in a spreadsheet app.
- Select the first empty cell under Job title and type a made-up job.
- Move across the row and add an employer and closing date.
- Save your copy. Open it again to check your entry is there.
